Step 1 - Define the type of use
It should be defined:
type of operation:
1、public transport, shopping centers, cinemas, offices.
2、the internal or external situation.
3、the flow of people to be transported and its frequency.
4、the use of shopping trolleys or luggage trolleys.

Step 2 - Define device technology
Rolling walkways should always be provided when shopping trolleys or luggage trolleys must also be transported.
The theoretical transport capacity depends on the width and speed of the escalator. The effective transport capacity is, according to the flow of passengers and the walking width, 40 to 80% of the theoretical capacity. In order to calculate the capacity of moving walkways, account must be taken of the transport of shopping trolleys and luggage trolleys.

Step 3 - Set the walking width and speed
The theoretical transport capacity is directly related to the walking width and the speed of the device. The actual carrying capacity depends on the choice that will be made between comfortable, moderately tight, or tightly packed stepping during periods of peak traffic.

Step 4 - Choosing the right inclination
For escalators, the inclinations of 30 and 35 degrees correspond to the international standard. The inclination of 30 ° offers maximum comfort and safety to the user. The tilt of 35 ° is the most advantageous because it is the one that requires the least space. However, when the height difference exceeds 6 m, this inclination is felt too strong, especially downhill. When the height difference exceeds 6 m, an inclination of 35 degrees is not allowed according to EN 115.

For inclined moving walkways, inclinations of 10, 11 and 12 degrees correspond to the international standard. It is with a slope of ten degrees that the user experiences the greatest comfort of walking. When space is limited, a twelve-degree inclination is chosen. For horizontal moving walkways, an inclination of 0 to 6 degrees

Step 5 - Choose the width of steps
Steps for escalators are available in different widths: 600, 800 and 1000 mm. The most common width is 1000 mm. This width makes it possible for the user, even loaded luggage and bags, to engage without any discomfort on the strip of steps. The other two widths are primarily used in low traffic areas and in small spaces.

Inclined moving walkway decks (10 ° to 12 °) are available in widths 800 and 1000 mm. The most common width is 1000 mm. Since moving boardwalks of this width are also suitable for the transport of shopping trolleys and baggage trolleys, they are mainly found in shopping malls and railway stations. It is generally recommended a width of trays of 1000 mm, since for the transport of shopping trolleys, the trays must be 400 mm wider than the trolley itself.

Horizontal moving walkways with an incline of 0 to 6 degrees, exist with trays of 800.1000, 1200 and 1400mm. In airports, there is an increasing tendency to use 1200 or 1400 mm moving walkways, because this width makes it easy to pass people with a luggage cart. Some suppliers also offer rubber walkways. The rubber bands are in principle available in three widths: 1000, 1200 and 1400 mm.

Step 6 - Choose the speed
Not only does speed have a major impact on the transport capacity of escalators and moving walkways, it also affects the space required.

The optimum speed for all escalators and moving walks in commercial spaces is 0.5 m / s. The combination of sufficient transport capacity, optimum safety and minimal space makes this speed the international standard for this type of application.

The speed of 0.6 or 0.65 m / s is especially recommended when people arrive intermittently, in stations or subway stations for example. In convention centers, this speed is also very popular. To ensure maximum safety and optimum load factor of the escalator or moving walkway at this speed, longer horizontal runs and larger transition curves are required.
